Spanish @ St. Bart’s

Our children are given the skills to flourish in all aspects of M.F.L. through the spiral curriculum that is followed.  Learning Spanish creates a ‘whole world’ learning focus for our children.

Children are supported to aim high (aspire) with their learning knowing that with determination and belief, they will succeed and create work of a high standard in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

St. Bartholomew’s CEP School intends to use the Linguastars scheme of work and resources to ensure we offer a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious foreign languages curriculum that will inspire and excite our pupils using a wide variety of topics and themes.

Our curriculum is intended to be progressive and purposeful, meaning that topics and levels are specifically chosen for each year group.

Topics contain essential vocabulary, phonics and grammar that is relevant to what is taught in KS3 and will therefore provide progression and transition from one Key Stage to the next.

Levels of topics ensures that vocabulary, phonics and grammar is not only built upon but is re-visited at a higher cognitive capacity.

We intend to maximise children’s ability to know more and remember more by staging our curriculum in a way that allows for more processing time and development so that language becomes embedded in long-term memory.

We aim to increase the motivation of language learning to increase confidence and as a result, attainment.

In order to achieve our intent, we have chosen a specific methodology of language learning known as E.P.I (Extensive Processing Instruction). This methodology refers to the communicative drills taught through chunks of language as an input (listening and reading) to create solid repetition and allowing more content to embed into long term memory. This then computes into output (speaking and writing) with the learner having more ability to generate autonomy and
spontaneity.

Our Long Term Overview demonstrates the content to be taught in each topic and level, and clearly demonstrates the vocabulary, phonics and grammar that is either a new or recycled concept.

By the end of each unit, teachers will be able to determine if children have obtained the objectives set out in that unit. Children will be able to demonstrate progression in their own year group, by attaining the objectives set out in the progression document.

Year 6 will be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge of vocabulary, phonics and grammar that they will use in their KS3 learning.

All children will have increased their motivation for language learning by accessing the challenges and games built into the Linguastars Framework. As a result, children will feel more confident using a Modern Language and will understand its important in our global society.

Children will have a better awareness and tolerance for cultural differences and will celebrate their place in our world.

Finally, staff will become increasingly confident in their delivery of languages, through the clearly sequenced stages of language learning and will have a better understanding as to how language is processed – leading to a rise in qualitative primary language teaching.
